Madeline Isaac-James is delighted to once again be exhibiting at the exclusive bridal trade show, White Gallery, London, between 20-22 May 2012. We’ll be showing our gorgeous new 2013 Collection which will be available in selected bridal boutiques by September this year.

British Designer, Natalie Gladman, believes that her 2013 Collection is the best collection yet and is excited to be launching her latest collection at this prestigious event. Natalie says “The 2013 Collection has been a pleasure to design – with a very clear story and drawing inspiration from those closest to me – the Collection takes an exciting new direction with new silhouettes and fabrics.”

NEW for the 2013 Collection will be a capsule collection of pretty silk flower girl dresses which are available on a special order basis – each designed to co-ordinate effortlessly with the bridal gowns, and perfect for brides that want their flower girl to be wearing something really quite special and exclusive, tying in beautifully to the bridal gown.

So, what can you expect in the 2013 gown Collection? Well, we won’t be giving too much away in advance of the White Gallery, but we can let you know that this latest collection has been lovingly made with the most beautiful beaded laces, hand-picked by Natalie, with lashings of silk tulle, lots of floaty silk chiffons and thousands of Swarovski crystals individually hand-sewn onto gorgeous silks.

Inspiration for the 2013 Collection has been drawn from key looks during the 1950′s, 1960′s and 1970′s, and was initially inspired by Natalie’s childhood memories of her mother’s stunning ballgowns and evening dresses. She has taken these delightful memories and designed a collection that is sure to appeal to brides wishing to wear a classic, timeless gown that will undoubtedly be loved and cherished by both the bride as well as generations yet to come.

A small selection of the new 2013 Collection wedding gowns will be showcased in the ‘Best of British’ catwalk show at 2pm on Monday 21st May. Look out for some stunning millinery on the catwalk, created especially for Madeline Isaac-James by the talented Jane Hardman-Ferris of www.hfcouture.co.uk

As the White Gallery is a trade only show, only bone fide bridal retailers may attend. Bridal retailers can register online and further information about the event, including directions, can be found at www.whitegallery.com.

Retailers wishing to view the Madeline Isaac-James collection may visit us on Stand 201, and can pre-book an appointment by emailing us at whitegallery@madelineisaacjames.com. Please advise your preferred day and time, and one of our Account Managers will contact you to confirm your appointment.

We’re really looking forward to the White Gallery and the buzz and excitement that inevitably surrounds such a wonderful event, and especially look forward to meeting both our existing and new stockists!

Who would have thought that a throw-away comment to the lovely Heather Cole, Senior Designer at Evelyn Cole Flowers would have resulted in a fabulous team being brought together for an amazing bridal shoot just a few weeks later?

Having decided to work together to showcase the talents of a number of wedding suppliers and related businesses, mostly from the Surrey/Hampshire area, we decided to focus on a theme inspired by the forthcoming Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The shoot was split into two very distinct elements – a fresh, funky Cool Britannia look; and a softer, more romantic English Rose look – and who better to capture that than photographer, Naomi Kenton who has been kind enough to provide us with a sneak preview at the very end of this post. Until then, I’m afraid you’ve got my dodgy camera-phone photos!

So to the venue: we’re very lucky to have a beautiful Castle right on our doorstep -Farnham Castle – which has a wealth of history and intrigue surrounding its 900 year history. Today this stunning Castle is one of the most important historical buildings in the south of England, and creates a picturesque backdrop to compliment the style and splendour of wedding celebrations.

The scene was set, the team was assembled, and some great wedding suppliers from all over Surrey and Hampshire met on a brisk Tuesday morning - all keeping a nervous eye towards the heavens as the weather forecast had predicted heavy rain from early afternoon! Not quite what we had wanted after the unexpected heatwave the week before!

Elizabeth and Madeline still smiling despite the rain!

Despite the on/off rain, the entire team worked hard throughout the day to create some really amazing images and were an absolute pleasure to work with. We can’t wait to see the images of the models with British Bulldogs ‘Alfie’ and ‘Lou’ as well as ‘Jamie’ the horse – you’ll need to wait until the official images are released to see them though!

If you’re planning a Cool Britannia theme wedding or looking for inspiration for a more traditional affair, then don’t miss them – we’ll be showcasing the work of some really amazing suppliers! Keep an eye on the blog for more details of when they’ll be released; and of course Facebook and Twitter, as we’ll be sharing the official shoot images very soon.

Don’t forget to tab down after the list of credits below to see a couple of sneak peeks from the shoot! Huge thanks to the following people who made the shoot possible; and whose hard work was much appreciated!

Our blog post today is not our usual in as much as it has nothing to do with weddings or the bridal industry. Instead, we are dedicating today’s post to both former and currently serving military personnel of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth, as a mark of respect on Remembrance Day. With our strong links with local military towns (one of them being our ‘next door neighbour’ Aldershot ‘the home of the British Army’) we see many brides whose husband-to-be is a member of the Armed Forces and indeed, brides themselves who are members of the Armed Forces. We feel it important to say thank-you to those who have, and continue to, put their lives on the line to maintain the freedom that so many of us take for granted.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

Remember, remember the 5th November? Well, brides that visited Perfection Bridal, Albion Street in Glasgow on Saturday 5th November will have had good reason to remember that day! A selection of gowns from the Madeline Isaac-James 2012 Collection made their way to Glasgow for the exclusive Designer Weekend event in-store. Not only was this an exciting weekend as it was the first time that the collection had been shown in Scotland, but it was also the official launch of Perfection’s brand new Designer Room in their Albion Street store.

Natalie Gladman, Designer of the Madeline Isaac-James collection, paid a visit to the store to cut the ribbon and officially announce that the Designer Room was open and ready for business! Attending the official opening and modelling the ‘Charlotte’ gown was the beautiful and ever so lovely Nieve Jennings, former Miss Scotland. With a full book of appointments on Saturday and Sunday, the team at Perfection Bridal met lots of lovely brides and were delighted to help so many brides find ‘the’ perfect gown! Brides were thrilled with the excellent service they received, the selection of dresses available, the sweet treats of cupcakes and of course that Scottish favourite, Tablet, the champagne and of course the goodie bags – all to celebrate the official opening of the gorgeous new Designer Room!

To book an appointment at Perfection Bridal in Glasgow, contact them on 0141 237 4423 or email the team at glasgow@perfectionbridalandmenswear.co.uk. Alternatively, you can pop into the gorgeous store in the heart of the Merchant City at 50 Albion Street, Glasgow, G1 1LH to meet the team and book your appointment.

This is the first of a series of ‘Spotlight on’ posts – which will feature a selection of our fabulous stockists! Today we’re featuring the wonderful Vow Bridal Gallery, near Peterborough, which opened at the beginning of September! We asked Lisa and Dave all about their business:

Tell us a little bit about yourselves, and Vow Bridal Gallery:

“We’re Lisa Smith and Dave Gallagher of Vow Bridal Gallery. The Gallery is just four weeks old, but our business is longer in the making! We have left the ‘corporate world’ and set up our business together. I (Lisa) wanted to get back to doing something creative! After doing a Performing Arts Degree I transferred my presentation skills to the environmental industry where I spent the next 17 years. I reached that classic time in my life when I wanted to do something different. Being in the bridal industry means I can realise my dreams of having a creatively displayed boutique (which we call the Gallery), as well as helping brides to select the perfect outfit for their wedding. We work hard to create a ‘total look’ for our brides and the overall style is something which really interests me. It has also given me the chance to work alongside my partner Dave as we also have formal menswear for hire.

Our Gallery is situated in the courtyard of the picturesque Haycock Hotel in Wansford near Peterborough. We knew we wanted a certain look and feel and so we held out for the right surroundings in which to locate our new business. We want the whole visit to us to be an experience and so our surroundings were really important. The Gallery is set on two floors within a listed stone building. Some trailing ivy sets off the outside, and the character filled interior makes for a great canvas for displaying our gowns and accessories.

It was really important to me to sell something a bit different. I spent a lot of time researching potential designers and I am pleased to say I found 3 who I am proud to be a stockist for! They are Natalie Gladman of Madeline Isaac-James, Sanyukta Shrestha and Annabel Jenkins.

I decided upon them obviously for their designs but also for their values as individuals. It was important for me to build a relationship with them. This isn’t about a faceless production line – it’s about aligning my skills in selling the gowns which these designers have spent so much time and effort creating. The gowns which make up the Vow Collection are a real mix of styles – traditional fairytale, vintage, 18th Century inspired, glitzy, sleek, simple, elegant, versatile, & quirky. There is something in there to suit all sorts of personality and style of wedding. As I said before we want people to come to the Vow Bridal Gallery and have an experience. It’s important for me to listen and understand what a bride-to-be wants for her big day and then I can help her find exactly what will suit her. We stock a range of accessories so that we can go for that all important ‘total look’. We have veils, tiaras, statement millinery, hair accessories, jewellery, stoles, jackets, boleros, silk bags, parasols & umbrellas.

We also have an extensive range of formal menswear to hire. This is situated on the ground floor of the gallery and has a bachelor pad vibe to help the men feel that finding the right suit isn’t a chore! We have an extensive range of Morning Suits and Edwardian Frock Coats as well as Lounge and Dinner Suits. To accentuate all our suits and to help match wedding colour schemes we have numerous stylish waistcoats, cravats, ties and handkerchiefs. And finally, to complete the look there are Top Hats and Canes! We started the business out of a passion to offer something a bit different and make people feel special so we hope this comes across when they visit us.

What inspires you, and what people and brands do you like?

At Vow we like to think of ourselves as being a very elegant, chic, classy, cool, creative, yet approachable and engaging place to find your perfect wedding attire! Here are some other brands that we like and why:

Creative display – We love it when shops come up with a different way of displaying their goods. Some recent examples include All Saints (a real industrial twist), Replay (especially the unique foliage filled shop front in the Milan store), & the Leeds Harvey Nichols store are always coming up with unusual window displays throughout the seasons.

Quality – For quality styling you can’t beat Aquascutum. In fact Dave often wears his Aquascutum suit in the gallery and Giovanni who does our gown alterations learned his trade there!

Technical but stylish – Oakley sunglasses have a high standard of technical performance which is never comprised however they are always at the forefront of style and trend.

What do you love most about what you do?

Meeting people, finding out about them and their wedding– seeking out the right look for them – their body shape, their personality, their vision for how they want to look and feel on the day. We also enjoy seeing the positive reaction of friends & family when either the bride or groom-to-be gets dressed up! We also love displaying our gowns and suits in creative ways to ensure they are shown off to their full advantage – they are in our eyes works of art which is why we call our boutique the ‘Vow Bridal Gallery’!”

What advice would you give brides to be when choosing ‘the’ dress?

Be open to different ideas and try different styles on – you might be surprised at what actually really suits you! Listen to others but be true to yourself. Visualise how you want to appear on the day and how you want to feel.

Finally, if you could have your picture taken with someone special who that would be and why?

For me (Lisa) it still has to be Robbie Williams! Especially dressed in his new Farrell menswear collection! Or perhaps I could dress him in one of our Vow suits!

For me (Dave) it’s Bryan Ferry. I’m showing my age here, I have been a fan since I was young, but he still looks cool & very suave.

Anyone who knows the Madeline Isaac-James team knows that apart from our families, we have three loves in life: Dresses. Shoes. Cake.

So it was with great pleasure that we learned all about the fabulous creations of a local Hampshire company, Gifted Heart Cakes – who’re (almost) just down the road from us – well, just down the M3. How could we resist talking to someone who has managed to combine two out of three of our favourite things in one delicious place?!

Don’t you just love the cake on the left made for a very lucky lady’s birthday – Natalie soooo wants one (but with a Louboutin shoe – she’s so picky!) Anyway, before we start talking too much about shoes (that’s for another post), we asked the lovely Emma Waddington, designer at Gifted Heart Cakes, to talk to us about her fabulous business…

Tell us how Gifted Heart Cakes started?

“I’ve always enjoyed baking and cake decorating as a hobby, I have been making cakes for around 12 years now. It started off with friends and family, and it progressed via word of mouth. My Nan was my initial inspiration as she has made wedding cakes for many years. I studied A level art and also did a Btec in Graphic Design, for me, decorating cakes is another extension of my artwork. At Gifted Heart Cakes we offer a bespoke wedding cake service. I tailor each cake specifically to my bride and grooms wishes. At an initial consultation we talk about wedding theme, colours, and personalities – anything that enables me to put a really personal touch to their design. We also make many novelty cakes (Birthday, Christening, Engagements and anniversaries to name a few). We pride ourselves on the level of individuality we give the cakes. But not only do they look good, they taste great too! Flavours range from Fruit and sponge to more adventurous flavours such as chocolate orange and white chocolate and raspberry.”

Where do you get your inspiration for your beautiful designs?

“I draw cake inspiration from everything! Clothes, gift bags, greeting cards, evenwallpaper. I can be walking through B&Q and something will catch my eye and I immediately think of what a pretty cake I could make. I also love anything vintage, beautiful colours or textures!”

What do you love most about what you do?

“I love the variety of what we do. No two cakes are the same and its such fun coming up with designs to meet people’s dreams. It’s also the best feeling seeing a bride on her wedding day overwhelmed with the cake you have just delivered. We also recently delivered the cake below. The bride cried when she saw it and I received this message from her which made all the hard work and stress so very worthwhile: “My dear Emma, I don’t know where to start… It was the first time I cried on my wedding day. Seeing the cake, you totally blew me away with the creation and so many people mentioned how gorgeous it was and tasted x. I loved the carrot cake, that’s my favourite. Thank you for dreaming even bigger than I possibly could and making my wedding day truly a dream come true xxxx Amanda”

What advice would you give brides to be when choosing a cake?

“Try to find a Cake designer whose style matches your own. Your wedding is a once in a lifetime event and you want to be sure that your cake maker truly understands exactly what your dream cake looks like and can make it a reality.”

In addition to stunning wedding cakes, we couldn’t resist sharing the cake below. Emma says: ”A recent cake I was asked to make was this dragon cake. It was a real challenge but well worth it to see the clients face!”

But, back to the wedding cakes! Here’s a few more to wet your appetite….

“Corny but I would have to say my Nan – the lovely “Nanny Jean” My love of cake making came from her. She is a very special lady – the kindest person I know.”

Huge thanks to Emma for sharing this with us. You can taste some of her gorgeous cupcakes at our Accessories Evening in the Farnborough boutique on Thursday 3rd November (6pm-9pm) – see http://www.madelineisaacjames.com/2011/10/accessories-evening-farnborough-boutique-thurs-3rd-november/ for more info; and if you can’t wait until then, why not contact Emma directly:

So you’ve found your dream gown, to-die-for shoes, the stunning hair accessory and perhaps you’re opting for a veil…. but have you thought of one of those very traditional items that not too long ago was on every brides’ shopping list… the garter?

Amelie garter

Traditionally, a garter is worn by the bride on her wedding day and the groom removes his new wife’s garter, which he tosses to the unmarried male guests. As with many traditions, the origins of removing the garter started in the Middle Ages where the groom’s men would rush at the new bride to take her garters off – believing than an article of the bride’s clothing would bring good luck! As you can imagine, this may result in the dress being somewhat damaged (and perhaps pyschological trauma to the bride!) so the tradition changed so that the bride would remove articles of her clothing, including the garter, and toss them to the male guests for good luck. Thankfully, this practise has further evolved and nowadays, the bride is usually only expected to throw her bouquet to unmarried females, and the groom may remove the garter (if the bride will allow!)

We love traditions and have searched high and low to find beautiful garters that we think are special enough to be worn with our gowns, and we are delighted to have found Atelier Rousseau. Charlotte, designer at Atelier Rousseau, designs exquisite, unique high quality garters – destined to be heirloom pieces - all hand-made using the finest fabrics in Kent, England. Forget any preconceived ideas you had about garters based on what you may have come across elsewhere (I’m talking about horrible low quality fabrics, poor finish and scratchy laces) the pieces that Charlotte makes are truly unique and very special. Finished in the finest silk dupions, French laces and with exquisite details such as freshwater pearls, Swarovski crystals and silk satin ribbons, these garters are beautiful couture pieces of jambe-bijoux (leg jewellery)!

So whilst we were perusing the veritable treasure trove of garters that Charlotte makes, we also came across horseshoes. Not something we’d set out to source, but seeing them sparked a memory of when I was about six years old of being ordered by my mum to run up to the bride and present her with a ‘lucky horseshoe’. Again – tradition. A tradition that we don’t see as much these days (and frankly, when you look at some ‘lucky horseshoes’ you probably wouldn’t want them in your wedding pictures – thinking of those tacky silver plastic things that you see in novelty shops. Yuck). No, the horseshoes by Atelier Rousseau are a frippery that you would quite happily have in your wedding pictures and again, are made with the highest quality materials using authentic traditional lightweight silver horseshoes.

So here’s the legend bit: It’s been told that the 10th Century Archbishop of Canterbury, Dunstan, who was a former blacksmith managed to outwit the devil. The devil was thought to have asked Dunstan to shoe his hoof but clever old Dunstan realised in the nick of time that his customer was the devil and nailed the shoe on as painfully as he could, and the devil begged for mercy. Dunstan agreed to remove the shoe on condition that the devil agreed never to enter a place where a horseshoe was hung over the door. Horseshoes have become a symbol of good luck and you’ll often see (particularly in old houses in the countryside) a horseshoe above the door. The legend is that in order to retain the good luck the horseshoe should be hung with the shoulders pointing upwards otherwise all the luck in your marriage would fall out. Harsh, but true. Apparently. Horseshoes are also thought to help with fertility – I’m guessing that’s why my mum was so insistent on my running up to the bride and handing over that horseshoe when I was young – must’ve worked as the bride had a healthy little baby boy within a year of the wedding! OK, that’s probably coincidence, but it’s a nice story….

All of the garters and horseshoes will be available in our Farnborough boutique from 1st November 2011, but are available to order beforehand if required. We’ll also have them (and an extended selection from Atelier Rousseau) at our fabulous Accessories Evening on Thursday 3rd November (as well as bubbly, cupcakes, free makeovers and 10% off all accessories purchased that evening)! Each Atelier Rousseau accessory is beautifully packaged in bespoke boxes also making them an ideal present for the bride-to-be – and whilst not an ‘essential item’ – they are a rather lovely addition to the wedding trousseau. We hope you love them as much as we do!
